About Charity Shift

In 2019, Charity Shift was born with a goal of helping charities and nonprofit organizations raise more money through customized coaching and consulting solutions.

Charity Shift is led by Sara Hoshooley who has worked in nonprofit organizations for the last 15+ years. Sara has helped organizations raise millions of dollars to further their missions. Her experience in fundraising includes individual giving, monthly giving programs, grant writing, corporate partnerships, employee giving campaigns, direct mail campaigns, peer to peer, online event based fundraising and sponsorship.

Sara’s passion for fundraising began at a small grassroots community development organization in Belize, Central America in 2009. Sara was working as a volunteer recruiter, connecting with volunteers from around the world who were interested in travelling to the small organization to volunteer their time. Shortly after arriving, it became clear that the organization needed to do some fundraising in order to keep all of their programming fully operational and sustainable. Sara quickly developed a crowdfunding campaign (which was fairly new at that time!) and reached out to all of the past volunteers who had given their time to the organization in the past. She also wrote to local government and businesses explaining the need for donations. Within weeks, the organization had raised well over their goal and Sara had fallen in love with fundraising.

Upon returning to Canada, Sara continued to hold volunteer, Board and leadership roles within the nonprofit sector and went on to obtain certifications in Fundraising Management and Nonprofit Management from British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT).

Sara has led fundraising teams, volunteers, and committees for many years at United Way and Cystic Fibrosis Canada, and volunteered her time with multiple committees at the Association of Fundraising Professionals Vancouver (AFP), as an AFP mentor to junior fundraisers, as a Fundraising Advisor at Vantage Point as part of their COVID-19 Response Program and most recently as an advisor to the Showcase of Fundraising Innovation and Inspiration UK (SOFII).

In 2019 and 2020, Sara volunteered as a Session Leader at the IFC, the world largest fundraising conference in The Netherlands. She was able to work with some of the best and brightest fundraisers from around the world and learn from changemakers from more than 100 countries. She also spoke at the conference about emerging trends and best practices in digital fundraising strategies, along with two other international speakers.

Clients and partners we’ve worked with

  • Blind Beginnings

“Sara was recommended to me by another colleague, and from our first conversation I could see why. Not only is she knowledgeable about fundraising and the non-profit world, but she’s also easy to work with. I am most impressed with how Sara can present an opposing perspective in such a gentle diplomatic way, that even those who feel adamantly opposed will pause to consider what she is suggesting. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Sara.” - Shawn Marsolais, Executive Director and Founder

  • BC Pregnancy Outreach Programs

“Charity Shift provided our non-profit organization support to adapt to the non-profit climate during the COVID-19 pandemic. Charity Shift was able to offer expertise, support and guidance that allowed our organization to transition in a new direction that could offer success and sustainability. We would highly recommend this service to any other charity or non-profit.” — BC Pregnancy Outreach Programs, Executive Director
